Thiruppavai (/thərˈpəvai/; Tamil: திருப்பாவை) is a collection of thirty Tamil stanzas in praise of the Lord Perumal. It is part of the Divya Prabandham, a work of the twelve Tamil literary giants known as the Alvar saints. It is an important part of Tamil literature.

The Alvar saints are known for their affiliation to the Srivaishnava tradition of Hinduism. Their works are often inspired by religious events. In this case, the Lord Perumal is the subject of the praise, and the event is the Tamil wedding of the heroine, Andal, and her lover, the hero of the love story, Raman.

In this song, Andal promises to marry Raman, but first plays a game with him. She promises to be his forever wife if he can prove his valor in battle.

The song ends with a prayer to the Lord for everlasting happiness and service.

This song, like many others in the collection, is inspired by a legend. The legend is of a couple who is blessed with a son and are invited to the heavenly realm by the god Shiva. The goddess Parvati asks them to leave their son with her, and they accept the request. However, they are not happy to leave their son behind, and so Parvati gives them a second chance.
